MASK, HORSE, AND ROBOT

In the Mask, Horse, and Robot series, Erin McGee Ferrell brings together three recurring forms: the horse as memory and guide, the Nigerian mask as ancestry and responsibility, and the robot as an emblem of humanity’s uncertain relationship with technology.

The masks connect Ferrell’s contemporary practice to her family history in Nigeria and to her own study at the University of Lagos. The robot enters the paintings as an ambiguous presence—part ally, part witness, and part warning—within narratives shaped by the hero’s journey.
